We provide a wide range of services related to the specialized asset class of timber investment. We establish a relationship with a client at various points in the investment cycle, such as entering or exiting the timber asset class or when problems or decision points emerge. For our clients with long-term needs, we help with investment oversight, governance and growth.
Our work generally falls in the following categories, although we also assist clients with other specialized projects.
Advise clients about timber: For clients with an emerging interest in timber, we provide important research data and resources, briefings on the asset class, customized studies and analyses, and assistance in making board presentations. Our role is to be a valuable partner in the consultant/client relationship by ensuring rapid access to our expertise whenever it is needed.
Create a strategy: We help clients develop or adjust their timberland investment strategy by evaluating how the investor’s objectives align with current market conditions and available options. Our strategic-thinking skills have been sharpened by decades of experience.
Build the portfolio: Our mission is to match the investment strategies to the client’s objectives with an emphasis on execution and feasibility. This process can include search and selection of portfolio managers, or implementing joint ventures or direct ownership. This is where our expertise can become invaluable. Our process includes identifying and analyzing risk, reviewing modeling techniques and underwriting assumptions, evaluating capabilities of potential managers, and asking the right questions that should be answered prior to investment.
Manage the portfolio: We can assume a lead or advisory role in the building and governance of timber portfolios. This often includes board presentations, investor board representation, performance monitoring, review and approval of operating budgets and long-term business plans, review of financial reports, compliance audits, critique of appraisals, identification of emerging risk areas and evaluation of exit decisions.
Solve problems: When problems arise –– such as conflicts of interest, manager or investment performance concerns, portfolio restructuring, extension decisions and minority investor liquidations –– TimberLink helps clients navigate to successful solutions by applying the tools of problem analysis to find a solution to each unique situation.
